Candidate Statement – Press Conference, Thursday, September 6, City Plaza, 12:30 p.m. I’m Susan Sandberg, City Councilmember At-Large running to support a Bloomington for everybody. Citizens of all incomes throughout the city are at the heart of every decision we make. My campaign represents what I put into action in looking forward to a prosperous future and giving back to the City of Bloomington. This is a community I’m proud to call home because of its talent, tenacity, and generous heart. The volunteers I work with in social service and arts nonprofits make priceless contributions to the quality of life in Bloomington. I plan to raise awareness and opportunity for those who create beauty, provoke thought, remind us of our humanity, and provide collective joy through art and entertainment. My position as coordinator of the Arts Administration program at Indiana University puts me in contact with some of the best of Bloomington – it’s performing and visual arts centers and established and emerging artists. I’m pleased to serve as co-chair of the Infrastructure Work Group convening this Saturday on behalf of the BEAD, the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District. Under the leadership of Miah Michaelsen, Assistant Economic Development Director for the Arts, we’re continuing a robust public discussion about the best direction for the BEAD. As a former social worker, I’m strength-based in my approach to making things better. In lifting up people, organizations, or a City – when we lead with our strengths, we win. And that’s what we’ll do in promoting the arts as a viable engine for economic growth in Bloomington’s downtown. We already boast of a thriving arts scene that other cities envy. But further investment in this downtown strategy will take obvious assets to new heights. It is respect for cultural diversity that Bloomington expresses in all its art forms. The list of artistic assets is long…ranging from the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival, to the remarkable artists of Stone Belt…from the world-class art that is a daily staple at Indiana University, and to our eclectic downtown arts venues. In the coming term, I look forward to supporting many progressive initiatives including the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District. The investment of time, talent, and resources will pay great dividends for economic development in support of a Bloomington for everybody.
