In what ways does Susan consider herself politically progressive? I defend civil rights for all and continue to speak out for the rights of gays and lesbians. I support social and economic justice, and a woman’s hard-won right to decide her own reproductive destiny. I champion efforts to reduce the wage gap between men, women and minorities. To strengthen democracy and ensure true equality, there should be more women and minority representation in elected offices at the local, State and Federal levels. Too many women and children live in poverty in this country of plenty, and that problem requires careful scrutiny and leadership. I am in favor of universal healthcare, and until that goal is achieved I support efforts to reform America’s deplorable healthcare system. We need strong safety nets for the sick, the disabled, and the elderly. I totally agree with a bumper sticker I saw recently that said: “Gay marriage doesn’t scare me, but no healthcare does!” I am concerned about the fragile environment and will support efforts that move us toward green building designs, efficient transportation systems, and a more sustainable community that is prepared for challenges in our future. I’m proud to live in a community that cares enough to establish a Commission on Sustainability, and I support the efforts of this dedicated group. I believe in sound science and the healing value of the arts. I hope for a strong and compassionate government that will work as hard for peace and unity as it toys with war and division.
